Neuropsychiatric evaluation

Individuals who come to the Virginia Institute of Neuropsychiatry for an initial evaluation should expect to be here the entire day (8:15 a.m. to 5 p.m. with a break for lunch).  Patients are expected to bring a parent, spouse, adult child or friend to their appointment.  It is very helpful to have information from the people who knew you before your symptoms occurred and with whom you spend time with on a regular basis.  PLEASE NOTE that children are not permitted to attend unless he/she is the patient.  Before your appointment, we will review relevant medical records to get a good idea of your medical and psychiatric history and current medical status.

Patients will spend the morning meeting with our assistant director, Jan Seabaugh.  Ms. Seabaugh will discuss medical history, current medical status and any other relevant information.  She will also conduct a brief mental status exam.  The patient will be allowed a 1 to 1.5 hour lunch break.  The afternoon will be spent with our medical director, Dr. David Ross.  Dr. Ross will continue the patient interview, perform a physical and neurological exam, and provide recommendations for treatment, as appropriate.
